Chiron is slow: it takes years to cross a sign and moves a few arcminutes a day at most. The hour of your birth matters only on the rare days it crosses from one sign to another.

Your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign that the small body Chiron was in when you were born. Astrologers call Chiron the wounded healer. They read its sign as a deep, early hurt and, in time, the place where you are best able to help others. Everyone born within a few years of you shares your Chiron sign. To find it, you only need your date of birth.

How the calculator works

Chiron is a real object, about 200 kilometres across, that orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. Charles Kowal found it on photographs taken at Palomar Observatory in 1977. It was the first of a class now called centaurs, and it sometimes grows a faint cloud of gas like a comet, so astronomers list it as both an asteroid and a comet.

The astronomy library behind this site covers the planets but not Chiron, so we worked its orbit out ourselves. We start from positions published by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, one every 20 years, and calculate the path between them under the pull of the Sun and the eight planets. Against NASA's own figures for where Chiron appears from Earth, the largest gap across 11 dates from 1930 to 2040 is 0.4 arcseconds, about 0.0001 of a degree. The comparison is on the method page.

Why Chiron spends years in some signs and months in others

Chiron's orbit is a stretched oval. At its closest it comes inside the orbit of Saturn, and at its farthest it reaches nearly to Uranus. It moves quickly at the near end and crawls at the far end. One lap takes 50.0 years, but the time is shared out very unevenly.

Years Chiron spends in each sign during one lap, averaged over the three laps from March 1918 to May 2068
SignYears
Aries8.3
Taurus7.0
Gemini4.6
Cancer3.1
Leo2.3
Virgo1.8
Libra1.8
Scorpio2.0
Sagittarius2.5
Capricorn3.6
Aquarius5.5
Pisces7.6

So a Chiron in Aries generation covers about 8 birth years, and a Chiron in Virgo generation fewer than 2.

Chiron retrograde

Chiron is retrograde once a year, for 128 to 157 days at a stretch, which is 39% of the time. About two people in five are born with it, so astrologers give it little weight on its own. Its practical effect is on the dates: Chiron usually enters a new sign, backs out of it for a few months, then goes in to stay. You can see the pattern in the table of dates.

The Chiron return

Around your 50th birthday, Chiron comes back to the place it held when you were born. Astrologers treat the Chiron return as a turning point of midlife: old hurts come up to be dealt with, and experience starts to count as something to pass on.

We worked out the return for three birthdays in every year from 1930 to 2040, 333 in all. The first exact date fell between ages 49.2 and 50.9. Because of the yearly retrograde, Chiron crosses the birth degree three times in 71% of cases, once in 24% and five times in 5%, spread over as much as two years.

A worked example

Take someone born on March 10, 1976. Chiron was at 25°27′ Aries that day, moving forward. It had been in Aries without a break since January 30, 1969 and left on May 28, 1976. The Chiron return came in three passes: May 27, 2025, October 4, 2025 and March 27, 2026, starting at age 49.

Someone born on June 15, 1995 has Chiron at 20°43′ Virgo. Chiron was near the fast end of its orbit then, and it stayed in Virgo only from September 3, 1993 to September 9, 1995. That return begins on August 19, 2045.

What each Chiron sign means

Chiron has been used in astrology only since its discovery in 1977. It is named after the centaur of Greek myth who taught heroes and healers, and who was struck by a poisoned arrow that left a wound he could not cure in himself. The readings follow that story: a wound, and the skill that grows from living with it.

Chiron in Aries

Chiron in Aries is read as a wound to the sense of self: a doubt about the right to exist, to take up room, or to put oneself first. Healing comes through acting anyway. People with this placement are said to become good at helping others find their courage.

Chiron in Taurus

With Chiron in Taurus, the sore point is security and worth. There may be an early experience of scarcity, or a feeling of never having or being enough. Astrologers read the healing as learning to value oneself apart from what one owns.

Chiron in Gemini

Chiron in Gemini places the wound in the mind and voice: feeling unheard, slow, or misunderstood, often from school years. The gift that grows out of it is careful communication, and patience with others who struggle to be understood.

Chiron in Cancer

In Cancer, Chiron touches belonging. Astrologers describe an early lack of nurture or a home that did not feel safe. The healing is learning to mother oneself, and these people often become the ones who make others feel at home.

Chiron in Leo

Chiron in Leo is read as a wound around being seen: a child whose play, talent or need for attention was dismissed. Shyness about shining is the result. The gift is the ability to encourage creativity and confidence in others.

Chiron in Virgo

With Chiron in Virgo, the wound is perfectionism. Nothing feels good enough, health or the body may be a source of anxiety, and criticism cuts deep. Healing comes with accepting imperfection, and the gift is practical, hands-on care.

Chiron in Libra

Chiron in Libra puts the hurt in relationships: a pattern of imbalance, rejection or losing oneself in a partner. Astrologers read the healing as learning that one is whole alone. The gift is skill at mending conflicts between others.

Chiron in Scorpio

In Scorpio, Chiron meets loss, betrayal and power. There is often an early brush with death, abandonment or a breach of trust. The healing is learning to trust again, and these people can sit with others in their darkest hours.

Chiron in Sagittarius

Chiron in Sagittarius is a wound of meaning: disillusion with a faith, a teacher or a truth once relied on. The search that follows is the cure. Astrologers describe the gift as wisdom that does not need everyone to agree.

Chiron in Capricorn

With Chiron in Capricorn, the sore point is achievement and authority. Recognition was withheld, or responsibility came too early. Healing means defining success for oneself, and the gift is guiding others to their own.

Chiron in Aquarius

Chiron in Aquarius is the wound of the outsider: feeling different, excluded or out of step with the group. Astrologers read the healing as finding people of one's own kind. The gift is making room for others who do not fit.

Chiron in Pisces

In Pisces, the wound of Chiron is to trust in life itself: a sense of being let down, unprotected or too open to the pain of the world. Healing comes through compassion with boundaries. The gift is deep empathy.

Questions people ask

How do I find my Chiron sign?

Type your date of birth into the calculator at the top. It gives the sign and exact degree. Because Chiron is slow, you can also find it from your birth year alone in the table of dates, unless you were born in a year it changed sign.

What sign is Chiron in now?

On October 11, 2026, Chiron was at 29°01′ Aries, moving retrograde. It stays in Aries until April 14, 2027.

Is Chiron a planet?

No. It is a small icy body, far smaller than any planet, on an unstable orbit among the giant planets. Astrologers use it alongside the planets because of the meaning attached to it, not because of its size.

When is my Chiron return?

Close to age 50. The calculator gives your exact dates. For birthdays from 1930 to 2040 the first pass falls between ages 49.2 and 50.9, and most people have three passes.

What house is my Chiron in?

The house depends on your rising sign, which needs your birth time and place. This calculator gives the sign and degree. If you know your rising sign, count whole sign houses from it: the rising sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on round to Chiron's sign.

Do I need my birth time?

No, apart from the handful of days in each decade when Chiron changes sign. If your birthday is one of them, the calculator shows both signs and asks for a time.
