Dominant Planet Calculator

Enter your birth date, time and city to see which planet leads your chart, and the points behind it.

Your date of birth

Much of the score comes from your rising sign and houses, which turn with the clock. Use the time on your birth certificate if you can.

Your dominant planet is the planet with the most influence in your birth chart. Astrologers judge that by where a planet sits, which signs it rules and how many other planets it connects to. There is no single official method, so this calculator uses a points system and shows every point it awards. You need your birth date, exact time and birthplace.

How the calculator works

The calculator finds the positions of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto for your moment of birth, along with your Ascendant and Midheaven. It then gives each planet points under the rules below. The planet with the most points is your dominant planet. Houses are counted in whole signs from the Ascendant.

The scoring rules

Why these rules

They follow what astrologers have long treated as signs of a strong planet. A planet on one of the four angles of the chart is the most visible, so it earns the most. The planet that rules your rising sign is called the chart ruler and is the usual first candidate for dominance. A planet in its own sign acts with full strength. And a planet tied to many others by aspect has a hand in most of what the chart does.

Aspects counted

An aspect is a particular angle between two planets. The calculator counts the five major ones, each with a margin either side called an orb.

Which planet rules each sign

Three signs have two rulers: the planet assigned in antiquity, and the modern planet added after its discovery. The calculator credits both.

A worked example

Take a birth at 7:30 pm on June 15, 1995 in Chicago. The Ascendant was in Sagittarius and the Midheaven in Libra. Jupiter comes out on top with 20 points, ahead of Mercury with 16.

Every planet's score for 7:30 pm, June 15, 1995, Chicago
PlanetPointsWhy
Jupiter8° Sagittarius, 1st house20On the Ascendant (+6). In the 1st house (+3). In Sagittarius, a sign it rules (+3). Rules your rising sign, Sagittarius (+5). 3 major aspects: opposition to Mercury, opposition to Venus, square to Mars (+3).
Mercury9° Gemini, 7th house16On the Descendant (+4). In the 7th house (+2). In Gemini, a sign it rules (+3). Rules your Sun sign, Gemini (+3). 4 major aspects: trine to Moon, conjunction to Venus, square to Mars, opposition to Jupiter (+4).
Venus6° Gemini, 7th house13On the Descendant (+4). In the 7th house (+2). Rules your Midheaven sign, Libra (+2). 5 major aspects: trine to Moon, conjunction to Mercury, square to Mars, opposition to Jupiter, opposition to Pluto (+5).

Neptune24° Capricorn, 2nd house33 major aspects: sextile to Saturn, conjunction to Uranus, sextile to Pluto (+3).

Move the same birth five hours earlier, to 2:30 pm, and the Ascendant is in Libra instead. The top score then goes to Venus and Neptune, tied on 10 points. Apart from the Moon, the planets have hardly moved in five hours. What changed is the rising sign and the houses, which is why the birth time matters so much here.

How often each planet comes out on top

A scoring method should not hand the title to the same planet every time. To check ours, we ran it on 3,000 birth moments spread evenly from 1940 to 2016 and around the clock, in Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Sydney, Mexico City and Karachi.

Share of 3,000 sample charts in which each planet was dominant
PlanetDominant in
Jupiter14.2%
Mercury13.6%
Saturn13.4%
Venus13.3%
Mars11.9%
Pluto8.1%
Moon7.0%
Sun6.9%
Uranus6.2%
Neptune5.4%

The winning planet scored 13.3 points on average. In 13% of the sample charts, two or more planets tied for first place, and each was counted as a share of a win. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn lead most often because each rules two signs, so they collect rulership points twice as often. The Sun, the Moon and the three outer planets rule one sign each.

What each dominant planet means

These are the usual readings of a chart led by each planet.

Dominant Sun

A dominant Sun puts identity and purpose at the centre of the chart. People with it are described as confident, warm and hard to overlook, with a strong need to create something of their own and be recognised for it. The shadow side is pride.

Dominant Moon

A dominant Moon makes feeling the main channel. Astrologers describe sensitivity, a long memory, strong ties to home and family, and moods that shift with the surroundings. Such people often look after others by instinct.

Dominant Mercury

With Mercury dominant, the mind leads. Curiosity, quick speech, wit, and a talent for learning, writing or trading mark this type. The difficulty usually mentioned is restlessness: nerves that do not switch off.

Dominant Venus

A dominant Venus brings charm and a strong need for harmony. Relationships, beauty, comfort and fairness matter greatly, and there is often an eye for style or art. The traditional caution is avoiding conflict for the sake of being liked.

Dominant Mars

Mars dominant gives drive. Astrologers describe directness, courage, competitiveness and a need for physical activity or a cause to fight for. Patience is the lesson, and anger is quick to rise and usually quick to pass.

Dominant Jupiter

A dominant Jupiter is read as optimism on a large scale. Generosity, humour, faith in the future and a love of travel, learning and big ideas are typical. Its faults are excess and promising more than can be delivered.

Dominant Saturn

With Saturn dominant, life is taken seriously from early on. Discipline, patience, responsibility and ambition define the type, along with a dry sense of humour. Astrologers say such people are often hard on themselves and tend to come into their own later in life.

Dominant Uranus

A dominant Uranus marks the independent thinker. Originality, a dislike of being told what to do, sudden changes of direction and an interest in what is new or unconventional are the usual themes. Staying put is the challenge.

Dominant Neptune

Neptune dominant brings imagination and a thin skin. Astrologers describe empathy, artistic or spiritual leanings, and a dreamy quality that others find hard to pin down. The difficulty is boundaries, and seeing things as one wishes they were.

Dominant Pluto

A dominant Pluto gives intensity. Such people are described as private, strong-willed and drawn to whatever lies beneath the surface, with a life marked by a few thorough reinventions. Control, and letting go of it, is the central theme.

Questions people ask

What is a dominant planet?

It is the planet that carries the most weight in a birth chart. Where your Sun sign describes one part of you, the dominant planet is meant to describe the overall tone: the planet whose themes keep turning up, whichever part of the chart you look at.

Can I have more than one dominant planet?

Yes. When two planets finish level on points, the calculator names both, and astrologers would read them as sharing the lead. In our sample that happened in about one chart in 7. It is also worth looking at your second and third planets when the scores are close.

Is the dominant planet the same as the chart ruler?

Not always. The chart ruler is simply the planet that rules your rising sign. It earns 5 points here for that, which is often enough to win, but a planet sitting on an angle or tied to many others can overtake it.

Why does another calculator give me a different dominant planet?

Because every calculator invents its own scoring, and most do not publish it. Some count asteroids, minor aspects or the elements; some use Placidus houses; some ignore the modern rulers. Differences are normal. Compare the top three from each: a planet that appears near the top everywhere is a safe reading.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. Without a time there is no rising sign, no Midheaven and no houses, and those account for most of the points. Even a time that is an hour out can change the rising sign and hand the lead to a different planet.

My town is not in the city list. What should I do?

Pick the nearest larger place that keeps the same clock time. A few dozen kilometres barely moves the Ascendant, so the scores will almost always come out the same.
