The Part of Fortune is a calculated point in the birth chart, found by combining the positions of the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant. Astrologers read its sign and house as the area of life where ease, health and material well-being come most naturally. You need your birth date, exact time and birthplace to find it.
How the calculator works
The Part of Fortune is not a planet. It is a sum. You take the distance from the Sun to the Moon and measure that same distance from the Ascendant. Which way you measure depends on whether you were born by day or by night.
| Birth | Sun is | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Day | Above the horizon | Ascendant + Moon − Sun |
| Night | Below the horizon | Ascendant + Sun − Moon |
The calculator finds the Sun, Moon and Ascendant for your birth, checks whether the Sun was above the horizon, and applies the matching formula. It shows every number it used, so you can check the sum yourself.
Why two calculators can disagree
The day and night rule is the traditional one, going back to Hellenistic astrology. Some modern astrologers and some software use the day formula for everyone. For a day birth the two approaches agree. For a night birth they give different answers, sometimes in opposite parts of the chart. This calculator uses the traditional rule and also shows what the one-formula version would give.
The house
The house is counted in whole signs: the sign your Ascendant is in is the first house, the next sign is the second, and so on. Calculators that use Placidus or another system divide the sky differently and can place the Part of Fortune one house away.
A worked example
Take a birth at 2:30 pm on June 15, 1995 in Chicago. The Sun was above the horizon, so this is a day birth. The Ascendant was 14°28′ Libra, the Sun 24°13′ Gemini and the Moon 1°37′ Aquarius. Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun gives 21°51′ Taurus, in the 8th house.
Now move the birth to 11:30 pm the same evening. The Sun had set, so the night formula applies. The Ascendant was 16°38′ Aquarius, the Sun 24°35′ Gemini and the Moon 7°06′ Aquarius. Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon gives 4°07′ Cancer, in the 6th house. The day formula would have put it at 29°10′ Virgo.
Where it falls for each Moon phase
Because the formula uses the distance between the Sun and Moon, the Part of Fortune follows the phase of the Moon you were born under. At a new moon it sits on the Ascendant. At a full moon it sits opposite, on the Descendant. The table gives its position at the exact moment of each phase, counted in equal 30-degree houses from the Ascendant.
| Moon phase | Day birth | Night birth |
|---|---|---|
| New moon | 1st house | 1st house |
| Waxing crescent | 2nd house | 11th house |
| First quarter | 4th house | 10th house |
| Waxing gibbous | 5th house | 8th house |
| Full moon | 7th house | 7th house |
| Waning gibbous | 8th house | 5th house |
| Last quarter | 10th house | 4th house |
| Waning crescent | 11th house | 2nd house |
Part of Fortune in each sign
These are the traditional readings by sign.
Part of Fortune in Aries
In Aries, the Part of Fortune is read as ease that comes from acting first. Things go well when you take the lead, compete, or begin something on your own account, and less well when you hold back to be polite.
Part of Fortune in Taurus
In Taurus, fortune is tied to patience and the physical world. Astrologers point to steady work, good food, land, craft and money managed carefully as the places where life feels abundant.
Part of Fortune in Gemini
In Gemini, the reading is that luck travels by conversation. Writing, learning, trading information and keeping many contacts are the channels, and variety is a need, not a distraction.

Questions people ask
Do I need my birth time?
Yes. The Part of Fortune is measured from the Ascendant, which moves about one degree every four minutes. Without a birth time there is no Ascendant, and no way to tell a day birth from a night birth.
Is the Part of Fortune the same as the Lot of Fortune?
Yes. Lot of Fortune is the older name, from the Greek. Pars Fortunae and Fortuna are the same point, and you will sometimes see it called an Arabic Part.
What is the Part of Spirit?
It is the mirror image of the Part of Fortune, found by swapping the formulas: the night formula for a day birth and the day formula for a night birth. Traditional astrologers pair the two, reading Fortune as the body and circumstances and Spirit as the mind and intention. The calculator shows both.
What does the symbol look like?
In a chart the Part of Fortune is drawn as a circle with a diagonal cross inside it.
My town is not in the city list. What should I do?
Choose the nearest larger city in the same time zone. A short distance changes the Ascendant only slightly, and the sign of the Part of Fortune is rarely affected.
