North Node Calculator

Enter your birthday to find your North Node and South Node signs, down to the degree.

Your date of birth
Add your birth time (optional)

The node takes a year and a half to cross one sign, so the time of day only matters if you were born on a day it changed sign. The calculator tells you if that applies.

Your North Node is the point where the Moon's path crossed the Sun's path, heading north, at the time you were born. Astrologers read its sign as the direction you are meant to grow in. Your South Node is always in the opposite sign. To find both, you only need your date of birth.

How the calculator works

The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against the path the Sun appears to follow through the zodiac. The two paths cross at two points. Where the Moon crosses going north is the North Node; the opposite point is the South Node. Eclipses can only happen when a new or full Moon falls near one of them.

The calculator takes the Moon's position and motion at the moment you were born, works out the plane of its orbit, and finds where that plane cuts the zodiac. We checked the result against orbital data from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at four dates between 1988 and 2026, and it agreed to within 0.003 degrees each time.

True node and mean node

The Moon's orbit wobbles, so the crossing point does not slide backward at a perfectly even rate. The true node follows the wobble. The mean node smooths it out into steady motion. Between 1930 and 2040 the two are never more than 1.96 degrees apart.

This calculator gives the true node and tells you when the mean node would put you in a different sign. That only happens for birthdays within about 6 weeks of a sign change.

A worked example

Take someone born on June 15, 1995. The true North Node was at 4° Scorpio that day, which puts the South Node at 4° Taurus. The node had entered Scorpio on February 1, 1994 and stayed until July 31, 1995, so everyone born between those dates shares the placement.

The node came back to the same degree on January 13, 2014, when that person was 18. That is a nodal return. The next one falls on August 4, 2032, at age 37.

Find the row that contains your birthday. The nodes move backward through the zodiac, so the signs run in reverse order. Dates are for the true node, in Universal Time.

What each North Node sign means

These are the traditional readings. Each one describes a pair, because the South Node always sits in the opposite sign.

North Node in Aries, South Node in Libra

A North Node in Aries points toward acting on your own initiative and trusting your first instinct. The South Node in Libra is the pull to keep the peace and to wait for someone else to choose. Astrologers read this placement as a push to go first, even when it ruffles people.

North Node in Taurus, South Node in Scorpio

With the North Node in Taurus, the direction of growth is steadiness: building something that lasts, at your own pace, and enjoying it. The South Node in Scorpio describes a habit of intensity and of living from one crisis to the next. The traditional advice is to choose calm and let it be enough.

North Node in Gemini, South Node in Sagittarius

A Gemini North Node asks for curiosity. Ask the question, hear the other side, and stay interested in everyday detail. The Sagittarius South Node already knows the grand theory and likes being right about it. Growth comes from listening more than explaining.

North Node in Cancer, South Node in Capricorn

The North Node in Cancer leans toward home, family in whatever form you make it, and letting people see what you feel. The South Node in Capricorn is at ease with duty, status and staying in control. Astrologers describe the task as learning that being cared for is not weakness.

North Node in Leo, South Node in Aquarius

A North Node in Leo calls for stepping forward: making something that is plainly yours and letting it be seen. The South Node in Aquarius prefers the edge of the group, watching and analysing from a distance. The reading is that your part is to take the stage and risk being judged.

North Node in Virgo, South Node in Pisces

With the North Node in Virgo, the way forward is practical. Routines, skills, useful work and attention to the body all belong here. The South Node in Pisces drifts, hopes things will sort themselves out and avoids hard edges. Astrologers say this placement grows by finishing what it starts.

North Node in Libra, South Node in Aries

The North Node in Libra points toward partnership and learning to weigh another person's needs alongside your own. The South Node in Aries is quick, self-reliant and used to going alone. The traditional reading is that the lesson is cooperation, and it does not come naturally at first.

North Node in Scorpio, South Node in Taurus

A Scorpio North Node asks for depth: facing change, sharing what you have, and letting go of what has run its course. The Taurus South Node holds on to comfort, routine and what it owns. Astrologers read this as a life that opens up each time you risk losing something safe.

North Node in Sagittarius, South Node in Gemini

With the North Node in Sagittarius, growth lies in picking a direction and trusting your own sense of what is true. The South Node in Gemini collects facts, sees both sides and second-guesses. The advice usually given is to commit, travel further and speak from conviction.

North Node in Capricorn, South Node in Cancer

The North Node in Capricorn leans toward responsibility, long-term goals and a role in the wider world. The South Node in Cancer retreats to the familiar and waits to be looked after. Astrologers describe the work as becoming the one others can rely on.

North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo

An Aquarius North Node points toward community, friendship and causes larger than yourself. The Leo South Node wants applause and takes things personally. The traditional reading is that this placement finds its place by contributing to a group without needing to lead it.

North Node in Pisces, South Node in Virgo

With the North Node in Pisces, the direction is trust: compassion, imagination and loosening the grip on how things should go. The South Node in Virgo analyses, corrects and worries over detail. Astrologers say growth here comes from accepting what cannot be fixed.

Questions people ask

How can I find out my North Node?

Enter your date of birth in the calculator at the top of this page. You can also look up your birthday in the table of dates. Either way you get the sign; the calculator adds the exact degree and your nodal returns.

What does it mean to have a North Node?

Everyone has one. It is a point in the sky, not a planet, and it marks where the Moon's orbit crossed the Sun's path when you were born. In astrology it stands for qualities you are growing into, and the South Node for habits that come easily and can hold you back.

What sign is the North Node in right now?

As of October 2026, the true North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node is in Leo. The node entered Aquarius on July 27, 2026 and leaves on March 26, 2028.

What happens to the North Node in 2026?

On July 27, 2026 the true North Node moved into Aquarius, and the South Node into Leo. It stays there until March 26, 2028.

What is a nodal return?

The nodes take 18.6 years to travel once around the zodiac. A nodal return is the moment the North Node comes back to the degree it held at your birth, which happens at about 18.6, 37.2, 55.8 and 74.4 years old. Astrologers treat these as years when your direction comes back into focus.

Do I need my birth time?

Almost never for the sign. The node moves about three arcminutes a day, so the hour you were born shifts it by a tiny fraction of a degree. You need a birth time and place to know which house your North Node is in, and this calculator does not work out houses yet.
