Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: from February 9, 2027 to March 3, 2027, moving from Pisces back into Aquarius; from June 10, 2027 to July 4, 2027, from Cancer back into Gemini; and from October 7, 2027 to October 28, 2027, from Scorpio back into Libra. That is 67 days in all, about 18% of the year. On October 21, 2026, Mercury was at 20°34′ Scorpio, moving forward.

What the shadow period is

Before Mercury turns back, it first passes the degree where it will later turn forward again. That moment starts the shadow. After it turns direct, Mercury has to travel back up to the degree where it first stopped, and reaching it ends the shadow. Every degree in between is crossed three times: forward, backward and forward again.

In 2027 that means the stretch from 20°55′ Aquarius to 5°58′ Pisces in February and March, 27°28′ Gemini to 6°21′ Cancer in June and July, and 19°18′ Libra to 4°55′ Scorpio in October. Astrologers often treat the shadow as part of the retrograde: matters raised in the first weeks come back while Mercury is retrograde, and are settled once it clears the shadow.
