Descendant Sign Calculator
Enter your birth date, time and city to find your Descendant sign and the planets that were setting when you were born.
Your Descendant is the point of the zodiac that was setting on the western horizon at the moment you were born. It is always exactly opposite your Ascendant, or rising sign, and it marks the start of the seventh house. Astrologers read its sign as the kind of partner you are drawn to and what you look for in close relationships. Finding it needs your birth date, exact time and birthplace.
How the calculator works
At any moment, half the zodiac is above the horizon and half is below. One degree is coming up in the east: that is the Ascendant. The degree directly across from it is going down in the west: that is the Descendant. The calculator converts your birth time to Universal Time, works out how the sky was turned over your birthplace, and finds both.
Because the two are always 180 degrees apart, the Descendant sign is fixed by the rising sign. Aries rising means a Libra Descendant, Taurus rising means Scorpio, and so on round the wheel. If you already know your rising sign to the degree, your Descendant is the same degree of the opposite sign.
What the calculator adds
Astrologers rarely stop at the sign. This calculator also reports two things they look at next:
- Planets on the Descendant. Any planet within 8 degrees of it was setting as you were born. Such a planet is read as a strong theme in your partnerships, and often as a quality you meet in other people before you see it in yourself.
- The ruler of the Descendant. Every sign has a ruling planet. Where the ruler of your Descendant sign sits in your chart is read as where partners tend to come from and what the relationship is about.
A worked example
Take a birth at 7:30 pm on June 15, 1995 in Chicago. The Ascendant was 13°23′ Sagittarius, so the Descendant was 13°23′ Gemini. Mercury at 9° Gemini and Venus at 6° Gemini were within 8 degrees of it, right at the western horizon. The ruler of Gemini is Mercury, which was at 9° Gemini in the 7th house.
Ten minutes later the Descendant had moved on by 2.1 degrees. The table follows that day through the clock.
| Clock time | Descendant | Ascendant |
|---|---|---|
| 12:00 am | 26°30′ Leo | 26°30′ Aquarius |
| 2:00 am | 18°22′ Libra | 18°22′ Aries |
| 4:00 am | 2°18′ Sagittarius | 2°18′ Gemini |
| 6:00 am | 3°08′ Capricorn | 3°08′ Cancer |
| 8:00 am | 28°10′ Capricorn | 28°10′ Cancer |
| 10:00 am | 21°36′ Aquarius | 21°36′ Leo |
| 12:00 pm | 14°59′ Pisces | 14°59′ Virgo |
| 2:00 pm | 8°35′ Aries | 8°35′ Libra |
| 4:00 pm | 2°02′ Taurus | 2°02′ Scorpio |
| 6:00 pm | 25°22′ Taurus | 25°22′ Scorpio |
| 8:00 pm | 19°42′ Gemini | 19°42′ Sagittarius |
| 10:00 pm | 18°19′ Cancer | 18°19′ Capricorn |
Some Descendant signs are more common than others
All twelve signs cross the western horizon once a day, but they do not take equal time over it. Away from the equator the zodiac meets the horizon at a slant, steep for some signs and shallow for others. A sign that takes longer to set is the Descendant for more of each day, so more people are born with it.

The columns run from the equator to the latitude of London, with one southern city. At London's latitude, Aries is on the Descendant for 2 hours 52 minutes a day and Libra for only 51 minutes, so if births are spread evenly round the clock, an Aries Descendant is more than 3 times as common there as a Libra one. South of the equator the pattern is reversed: in Sydney the long stay belongs to Leo. Each column adds up to 23 hours 56 minutes, the time the sky takes to turn once.
Descendant and the seventh house
The Descendant is the cusp, or starting line, of the seventh house, the part of the chart given to marriage, close partnerships and open rivals. In whole sign houses the entire sign your Descendant is in is your seventh house. In systems such as Placidus the seventh house begins at the exact Descendant degree. Either way the sign is the same.
What each Descendant sign means
Each reading names the rising sign that goes with it, because the two are read as a pair: the Ascendant for how you meet the world, the Descendant for whom you look for in it.
Descendant in Aries, Libra rising
With the Descendant in Aries, your rising sign is Libra. Astrologers read this as someone agreeable who is drawn to partners who are direct, independent and decisive. The lesson of the pairing is to stop leaving the first move to the other person.
Descendant in Taurus, Scorpio rising
A Taurus Descendant goes with Scorpio rising. You are intense and guarded, and the partner who suits you is calm, steady and comfortable in their own skin. Relationships work when they offer the security you find hard to give yourself.
Descendant in Gemini, Sagittarius rising
The Descendant in Gemini pairs with Sagittarius rising. You look at the big picture, and you are drawn to partners who are curious, talkative and quick. A relationship needs conversation and variety to hold your interest.
Descendant in Cancer, Capricorn rising
With a Cancer Descendant and Capricorn rising, the self-reliant exterior looks for warmth. Astrologers describe attraction to nurturing, emotionally open partners, and relationships that become a refuge from duty.
Descendant in Leo, Aquarius rising
A Leo Descendant sits opposite Aquarius rising. You keep a certain distance, and you are drawn to people who are warm, expressive and proud. The partner brings heart to someone who tends to lead with the head.
Descendant in Virgo, Pisces rising
The Descendant in Virgo goes with Pisces rising. You drift and dream; the partner you look for is practical, organised and reliable. Astrologers warn against choosing someone to fix, or someone who only criticises.
Descendant in Libra, Aries rising
With the Descendant in Libra, your rising sign is Aries. You act first and alone, and you are drawn to partners with charm, tact and a talent for compromise. Libra is the natural sign of the seventh house, and partnership matters a great deal in this chart.
Descendant in Scorpio, Taurus rising
A Scorpio Descendant pairs with Taurus rising. You like things simple and stable, yet you are drawn to intense, complicated, private people. Astrologers read relationships here as transforming, sometimes more than is comfortable.
Descendant in Sagittarius, Gemini rising
The Descendant in Sagittarius goes with Gemini rising. You collect facts and options; the partner who attracts you has convictions, a wide view and a taste for adventure. Often they come from a different background or country.
Descendant in Capricorn, Cancer rising
With a Capricorn Descendant and Cancer rising, a soft exterior seeks structure. You are drawn to partners who are mature, dependable and ambitious, sometimes older. The reading is commitment taken seriously and built slowly.
Descendant in Aquarius, Leo rising
An Aquarius Descendant sits opposite Leo rising. You shine, and you look for a partner who is independent, original and unimpressed by show. Friendship is the base of the relationship, and both people need room.
Descendant in Pisces, Virgo rising
The Descendant in Pisces goes with Virgo rising. You analyse and organise, and you are drawn to gentle, imaginative, intuitive partners. Astrologers caution against rescuing, and against partners who are never quite present.

Questions people ask
How do I find my Descendant sign?
Enter your birth date, time and city above. If you already know your rising sign, you can also read it straight off: the Descendant is the sign six places further round the zodiac, directly opposite.
Is the Descendant always opposite the rising sign?
Yes, without exception. The Ascendant and Descendant are the two ends of the horizon line, so they sit at the same degree of opposite signs in every chart and every house system.
Does my Descendant describe my future spouse?
Not a specific person. Astrologers read it as the qualities you are drawn to and tend to bring out in partners, in business as well as in love. Many also say it shows traits you have not owned in yourself, which is why they turn up in the people you choose.
What if I have no planets on my Descendant?
That is the usual case, and it does not mean relationships are unimportant. Astrologers then give more weight to the Descendant's sign and to where its ruling planet sits. The calculator shows both.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
To the nearest few minutes if you can. In the example above, ten minutes moved the Descendant by 2.1 degrees. The calculator checks 15 minutes either side of the time you enter and warns you if the sign would change.
My town is not in the city list. What should I do?
Use the closest listed city that shares its time zone. Moving a short way east or west shifts the Descendant by well under a degree.
